Ozempic® is a medication developed by Novo Nordisk specifically for treating type 2 diabetes. This section provides insights into how this drug has spurred the development of weight loss treatments. The medication contains the active ingredient semaglutide. This molecule mimics GLP-1, a natural intestinal hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar and appetite.
Initially developed to treat type 2 diabetes, researchers found that the medication also induced weight loss. This led to its off-label prescription for weight loss. Subsequently, the active compound was specifically studied for weight loss, leading to the approval of Wegovy®. Wegovy® contains the same active compound as Ozempic® but is approved for treating severe obesity.
How does Ozempic® work?
The medication operates by impacting the brain’s appetite control and blood sugar regulation. This induces a sensation of fullness, diminishes hunger, and reduces the urge to eat. Consequently, the medication facilitates consuming fewer calories than one burns, resulting in weight loss.
Are there any side effects to Ozempic®?
As with any medication, there is a possibility of experiencing side effects when using Ozempic®. Most side effects are mild and temporary, primarily associated with the gastrointestinal tract, such as nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Instances of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) are possible but very rare.”
